Gulf Breeze Community Center Under Construction

Phase 2, currently under construction, is the new 24,000 SF addition that will include a gymnasium, two multi-purpose rooms, a new entry and lobby, restrooms and a covered porch area. Phase 2 is expected to be complete this October, prior to the Phase 3 renovation of the existing building.

Steve Jernigan elected to AIA College of Fellows

Washington, D.C., February 18, 2011-The American Institute of Architects (AIA) elevated 104 architects to its prestigious College of Fellows, an honor awarded to members who have made contributions of national significance to the profession.

Out of a membership of over 80,000, there are fewer than 2,700 AIA members distinguished with the honor of fellowship. It is conferred on architects with at least 10 years of membership in the AIA who have made significant contributions in the following areas: the aesthetic, scientific, and practical efficiency of the profession; the standards of architectural education, training, and practice; the building industry through leadership in the AIA and other related professional organizations; advancement of living standards of people through an improved environment; and to society through significant public service. Steve Jernigan of Bay Design Associates Architects was elected to receive this honor because of his/her contributions to leadership through governmental advocacy and public affairs initiatives influence component strategies throughout the country.

The new Fellows, who are entitled to use the designation "FAIA" following their names, will be invested in the College of Fellows at the 2011 AIA National Convention and Design Exposition in New Orleans on May 13.

Steve Jernigan awarded AIA Grassroots Excellence Award "Outstanding Individual Contribution in Governmental Affairs"

Each year at Grassroots, the AIA recognizes some of the Institute's best state and local component programming. Categories, which include government affairs, membership, public affairs, and continuing education, celebrate individual members and entire components. This year Steve Jernigan from the AIA Northwest Florida Chapter was awarded the "Outstanding Individual Contribution in Governmental Affairs" award.

Since 1984, Steve's leadership has been celebrated throughtout AIA's ranks, both within his Chapter, as well as nationally. The continuing themes of protection and governmental advocacy are woven throughout his career as a professional and as a leader in AIA. These efforts have been a model for other states and been recognized by AIA National as best Practices. As a result of Steve's legislative work, the Chapter has been awarded 3 separate Grassroots Excellence awards. He has been a relentless protector of the profession, successfully leading the charge toreduce the statute of repose for architects, repeal the "Joint and Several Liability" laws, defeat the sales tax on professional services in Florida,and defeat efforts by Interior Designers to sign and seal permit documents.

For his skillful expertise in improving the legislation affecting the design community, protecting professionals and consumers alike, Steve Jernigan is recognized with the "Governmental Affairs: Outstanding Individual Contribution" award.

Kelly Wieczorek, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP BD+C awarded AIA Associate Individual Honor Award

The AIA Florida Northwest Chapter wishes to announce Kelly Wieczorek, Associate AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Director of Sustainable Design of Bay Design Associates Architects, Pensacola, Florida, as the 2010 recipient of the Florida Association of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Associate Member Individual Honor Award. She was presented with the award on August 21st at the 2010 AIA Florida Annual Convention at the Sawgrass Marriot Hotel in Ponte Vedra Beach.

The AIA Associate Member Individual Honor Award recognizes an associate member whose leadership, activities and service to AIA Florida have been a direct benefit to the profession. After joining the Northwest Florida Chapter of the AIA, Kelly was appointed to the Board of Directors and also asked to serve as the Associate Director in order to represent and speak on behalf of interns, Associate members, and young Architects. Through her efforts, the Chapter has developed programs and initiatives that have had a positive impact on emerging professionals in the local area, including registration exam training workshops for intern architects.

Kelly has also worked with local community organizations in a variety of leadership roles including the President/Board member of the Northern Gulf Coast Chapter of the United States Green Building Council, volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, and instructor for the UWF Summer Explorers architecture program.

As Director of Sustainable Design of Bay Design Associates Architects, Kelly specializes in green building practices. She is currently working on sustainable design projects for both public and private sector clients throughout the Southeastern United States, including the new Escambia County Central Office Complex which will be certified with the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) criteria.
